In 1885 William Horwood and Reuben Horwood began a steam-operated sawmill at Clarks Beach, a partnership which also had a business dealings with Colin Campbell, a sawmill operator a Campbellton, Dog Bay, and Notre Dame Bay. In 1896 Horwood’s bought the Dog Bay operation from Campbell and purchased the remainder of his shares in the company. William Horwood was the president of the company, Reuben was secretary-treasurer. Mr. Edwin Mews was the first general manager of the mill from 1902 to 1946 (when he died), and he was replaced by Peter Hoddinott who remained till the closure of the mill. Israel Dean was the millwright until his death in 1933 and was replaced by Ned Barnes who remained till closure. Bob Pike was the wood manager but he resigned to take a position with the old A.N.D Company, now known as Abitibi-Price. He was replaced by Aquilla Woolfrey, who remained until death in 1930, and was replaced by Peter Hoddinott. He later then moved to general manager.
